MIGRATION MUSEUM

ECHO is a fictional migration museum in Amsterdam proposed by Studio Batman. It transforms the city's deep-rooted migration history into a spatial narrative. An echo is what you send out that comes back. Changing, but related, it points to the connection between places, times and people.

The museum not only tells the story of migration, but also reconstructs this story through seven pentagonal forms that derive from a common base but differ in terms of form and height. These pentagonal forms diversify as they rise, just as people from different geographies feed on the same base and develop in different directions.

The lace, which has an important place in many cultures, comes alive on the exterior of the structure with a modern interpretation. These lace motifs made of steel also stand out as a layer representing the collective cultural memory carried by migration. The lace is used to protect what's cherished. Here, it preserves the museum’s cultural collection.
