BEŞİKTEN MEZARA GURBET

Beşikten Mezara Gurbet is rooted in Batman’s personal memory and a shared history of migration. It connects stories of migration with architecture. It is inspired by two elements: the honeycomb-shaped flats of the Bijlmermeer, once the residence of Batman’s father, and a hand-woven carpet made by his grandmother.

The red bricks, which reflect the modular structure of the Bijlmer flats, stand on the carpet and extend into the space. The carpet, traditionally a symbol of domesticity, thus changes into a landscape. It raises questions about how to make your house your home. Where does home begin, and where does it end? From someone's room to the house, from the neighbourhood to the city, from the homeland to the world.
